About

Shane McFarland enjoys serving his fellow citizens as Murfreesboro’s mayor and seeks to continue the progress this wonderful city has made during his time as mayor.

Shane’s agenda has always been and will continue to be economic development, orderly growth, and building an even better quality of life for everyone.

“Murfreesboro is successfully competing against much larger cities for attracting new jobs and businesses. As a small business owner, I understand how bringing in new businesses and jobs helps everyone improve their standard of living. More jobs help all of us as well as keeping our taxes low and economy prospering.”

Having served on Murfreesboro’s City Council as a member of the Parks and Recreation, Cultural Arts, and Planning commissions, McFarland understands how important the task is to make Murfreesboro one of
America’s most livable cities.

“Murfreesboro has a lot to offer. It is a great place to live, raise a family, or enjoy retirement. We have an outstanding quality of life, and that’s why so many new residents now call it home,” he said.

McFarland, an MTSU graduate and former Student Government Association President, began Shane McFarland Construction in 2008. “I know about making payroll and the struggles of small businesses. I’ve had to be fiscally responsible and conservative, doing more with less – principles I’ve applied to serving on the City Council and as the Mayor of Murfreesboro,” he said.

Murfreesboro’s property tax has not increased in 30 years; an accomplishment McFarland credits to the City’s fiscally conservative practices as well as retail venues, tourism, and recreational offerings.

“We rely less on our property tax revenue, as our sales tax base grows. Lower tax rates are a key factor in recruiting business,” he said.

While on the City Council, McFarland helped initiate the City’s customer service program, which is not only business-friendly, but helpful to City residents as well. “The Council, working together as a team,
implemented customer service training and performance measures to improve the level of service residents and business experience when dealing with our municipality.

“I am grateful for the privilege of serving as Mayor; I will continue to work with businesses, community organizations, the city council; federal, state, and local officials; the Chamber of Commerce; and
residents, seeking their input and direction on the challenges and opportunities facing Murfreesboro.”

McFarland serves on the Pension and Golf commissions and is president of the Linebaugh (library) Foundation board. He is a past Discovery Center and Special Kids board member and Noon Rotary secretary. McFarland is a founding board member and treasurer of the Murfreesboro Half Marathon
and coaches his sons’ baseball team. Shane and his wife Ashley are raising three sons.
